Be A Man

by Pink Williams

/

about

I wrote this song about as an anthem of Toxic Masculinity and the pain it causes not only those around us but the toxic men themselves.
Just in case it wasn't clear that this is satire, I do NOT agree with the views in this song.

lyrics

I don’t understand the world we live in.
Back in my day men were men and women were women.
The USA was number one, and everybody had a gun.
And you could get away with casual racism by saying “just kidding”.
We didn’t give out prizes just for participation.
And we didn’t lend a hand to any third world nation.
We feared God, and the World feared us
And minority groups didn’t make a fuss.
The country was great if you were a rich, upperclass Caucasian.
America used to be a lot more manly.
Dudes had names like Dick and Ralph and Stanley.
We flew the Flag and drove a Jeep
And our wives and daughters didn’t make a peep
When we drank too much and took it out on the family.
Bein’ a man meant being emotionally cold.
bottlin up yer feelings til you’re shriveld up and old.
We never hugged our daddies, cuz they thought it’d make us gay.
And we were too damn scared of them to try anyway.
When a boy became a man, the time had come.
To send him off to war for a little fun.
Cuz There ain’t nothin manlier than guns and smoke and steel
And killing who they tell you to til you’re too numb to feel.
And when we come back traumatized we take it out on you
Cuz we were told it’s the manly thing to do.
Therapy’s for sissies, a man should hide his pain.
Til it comes back up as trauma and we slowly go insane.
We weren’t allowed to shed a single tear.
There’s no room for weakness, doubt, or fear.
A man should be as stoic as a statue made of stone.
But most of all, a man should be alone.
Alone with all the pain inside. Alone with all the guilt.
And every man should break his heart for this construct that we’ve built.
Cuz what the point of all the hell our fathers put us through
If we don’t keep tradition by putting it on you.
