lyrics

I was walking down a trail
in the thick of the woods
Stoned to the bone
and liquored up good
Stumbling and bumbling through
thicket and thorn when then…
In the corner of my eye
I started to spy
thick smoke in the trees
from a flame glowin high
And the hills echoed sounds
that couldn’t be made by men

I didn’t run like I knew I should
I wondered a little too
Far in the woods
‘Til I couldn’t remember which trail
I could take to go back
By the time I’d noticed
I’d lost my way
Night had smothered the light of day
and the glow in the trees
was all I could see through the black

Just when I thought I was lost and alone
I heard a bellowing shriek
that rattled my bones
and nearly made me fall to my knees in fright
Suddenly out of the smoke and the trees
two glowing red eyes were Lookin’ at me
and I knew right then there was
something in the woods that night

I wanted to run, but before I could try
The mysterious creature flew up to the sky
Eclipsing the moon with the length of it’s outstretched wings
It soared around all across the sky
before it landed with a thud and looked me dead in they eye and said
“Howdy, I’m MothMan,
can I help you out with anything?”

Now it took a moment for the shock to fade
But after a while I wasn’t afraid
Then he shook my hand and
apologized for the fright
He said “I didn’t mean to cause a fuss,
I’m just a little bit buzzed because
I’m on my way to the cryptid campfire tonight!”

I didn’t really know what to say,
But I followed my monster pal
anyway
and before too long I could see
he had plenty of friends
I saw a huddle of shadows ‘round
a big campfire
Sipping’ on beers in woodsy attire
Like a couple of buddies away
on a long weekend

There was BigFoot roastin’ a hot dog or two
and the Jersey Devil was rolling a doob
while the Chupacabra was struggling
to put up a tent
But when MothMan joined the cryptid crew
he said “y’all, I brought a snack for you!”
And I suddenly knew what
“we’d love to have you” meant

Now of course didn’t wanna be rude
But I sure as hell didn’t wanna be food
So I said goodbye and ran as fast as I could
I ran and ran ‘til my feet were sore
From beating the dirt off the forest floor
Till I finally found the trail that leads out
of the woods

Though I may have escaped
unharmed that night
I learned a mighty fine lesson that night
And I’ll tell you now
so you don’t do what I done
If you’re walking alone in the woods at night
be sure to bring a good flashlight
And if you hear strange sounds in the hills,
You better run
